"Mr President, can I take this opportunity to thank Mr Tarabella for this very good question. He is quite right to think that many of us question whether it was wise to spend the six billion, but we have an old saying where I came from: ‘on the one hand and on the other hand’.
This, I think, is where we are in this debate. We are in the middle somewhere and we have not found the right place to be. Yes, it is right that we should be developing more alternatives within our own European Union. Yes, it is right that we should be less dependent and, yes – and I throw it back at you, Marc, because I know you will not agree – should we not be using more GMO grain in Europe to actually encourage this and even defeat disease?
There are many opportunities out there. Let us look at them but I think that we in the European Union are in danger of not getting it right at any stage. Let us try and get something right at this moment in time. I do not think we have."@en1
