"Mr President, the Seventh Congress of the Party of European Socialists was held in Porto from 7-9 December, under the slogan 'A New Social Europe'. Many key issues for the future of Europe and the European Union were raised during the congress. It was recognised that the provision of appropriate and accessible child care was a priority matter, so as to allow young parents to continue in paid employment. Investing in our children’s future is an investment in our own future.
A great many documents were adopted. Chief amongst them were a resolution laying down ten principles for a New Social Europe, a resolution on the Middle East, a resolution on Belarus and a resolution on a new social democratic energy policy. The latter seems to me to be entirely relevant and particularly important because of Europe’s increasing dependence on a small number of suppliers of sources of energy.
Mr President, this congress proved once again that the Socialists are the most important political force in Europe. It is they who are the driving force working to secure Europe’s future."@en1
