lpv:translated text	". We voted in favour of this report. Although we do not endorse all of its recommendations, we are broadly in favour of the thrust of its aims. We believe it is necessary to strike a balance between the improvements that must be made to animal welfare, the rights and interests of small and medium-sized farmers and consumers’ rights. We know that it is necessary to implement a system for assessing the welfare of all flocks in the slaughterhouse, but we also know that there are costs to be taken into account and that small operations do not usually have the conditions in place to carry out these assessments. We therefore advocate an extended deadline to allow for a trial period and subsequent adaptation to a system that does not exist in Portugal. We also feel that, as things stand, some of the proposals that have arisen in plenary have been excessive, and do not support them given the detrimental consequences that they may have for small producers, if there is no trial period."@en1
