"Mr President, I was pleased to vote in favour of this report on unlocking opportunities for small transport businesses. The sharing economy’s potential to create jobs and wealth and to tap into underused resources, its collaborative function, and even its vision for improved resource consumption, make it a good fit for modern-day society. However, the report acknowledges the impact that the take-up of digital technologies in the sector can have on working conditions. It is termed the ‘gig economy’ for a reason.
Our efforts are rightly focused on improving the wage-earning opportunities and ensuring competition for small transport businesses. It is important to make the economy more inclusive in this regard. Ireland is in the vanguard of embracing opportunities within collaborative business models, according to a recent Eurobarometer poll. I therefore welcome the recommendations offered in this report on how to ensure that the collaborative transport sector, as popularised by Uber, works for everyone involved."@en1
