"On International Women's Day, myself and other Labour MEPs are sending a very clear message that action must be taken to protect women and girls seeking asylum in the EU. I was very proud to vote in favour of this report. Women refugees and asylum seekers have specific needs that can be overlooked by an asylum policy that does not take into account their gender. To meet the needs of everyone seeking protection, our asylum laws and policies must be fully gender—sensitive throughout the process from arrival to integration. Research has shown that women and girls face violence, assault, exploitation and sexual harassment at every stage of their journey, including on European soil. Gender based violence is often aimed at the most vulnerable, this leads to women – and indeed children – who are entitled to claim asylum finding their indeterminate legal status being exploited to coerce them into transactional sex and forced into prostitution to pay for travel documents or a place in a boat or lorry. To prevent this kind of gendered violence there needs to be adequate processes and safe passage for them to be able to claim asylum without facing this kind of degradation."@en1
