"I would like to congratulate my colleague and fellow Labour Member Mary Honeyball on this report and all the work that she has put into it. The report that was put in front of the chamber today calls for a number of measures to ensure that women’s needs are met throughout the asylum process, allowing for gender-specific training for staff, including comprehensive training on sexual violence, trafficking and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Indeed, in 2015, about one million people crossed the Mediterranean into Europe, with women and children making up around 35% of the refugees. We need to highlight the exceptionally vulnerable situation that female asylum seekers and refugees in the European Union face. Having fled persecution in their home countries, seeking a place of safety, many become victims of sexual violence, trafficking and other violent crimes, which disproportionately affect women. I want to see a more gender sensitive asylum procedure through the measures outlines in this report."@en1
