"I voted in favour of a new animal welfare strategy for 2016-2020. It is imperative that we uphold European values by protecting and safeguarding the welfare of animals. To achieve this the Commission must draw up a new and ambitious plan. In its response where there is clear scientific evidence demonstrating animal welfare problems the Commission must be flexible in its adaption of existing instruments to meet these issues. The promotion of innovation and research on the development of new animal welfare techniques and technologies is also vital to ensuring, so far as possible, good treatment of animals in these situations. There has been good progress on this recent years, but we need to go further in the years to come."@en1
