"Mr President, the situation of migration into the Mediterranean is one which is one of the most important issues for the whole European Union. Europe must approach immigration with respect for fundamental rights, international obligations, human dignity and life. We need to have a sensible and balanced approach. There is a significant increase, year on year, in the number of people dying while attempting to make the journey to Europe. This is unacceptable and unsustainable. Europe needs an approach which is achievable but not idealistic. There is no simple answer, but what this Parliament needs most is what the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) has asked for: a holistic approach which looks at all the tools available to the EU in order to respond to the crisis. This includes looking at the responsibilities of Frontex and how we can save those vulnerable and exploited from dying at sea, as well as confronting the appalling actions of the human traffickers and smugglers who are so often responsible for their plight. We need to deal with third countries strongly and effectively to tackle immigration at source, and how we can work on resettlement and returns policies with them. There also needs to be a period of reflection where Member States take responsibility for processing efficiently, quickly and immediately in the first place of arrival. This is something benefiting the asylum seeker and the EU as a whole. Neither opening Europe’s borders wide nor slamming them shut is the solution to this problem. Instead, we must put away ideology and populism and we must find a realistic and workable way forward to solve those problems."@en1
