"Mr President, thank you very much for that question but you obviously were not listening to my speech, because I made the specific point that New Zealand, which adheres to the One China policy and does not recognise Taiwan as an independent state, has concluded a free trade agreement with the territory. Taiwan belongs to the World Trade Organisation: most of the states within it do not recognise Taiwan as an independent country.
We live in a world of constructive ambiguity towards Taiwan’s status. It is a democracy, it shares our values, and whether you recognise it or not – and some thirty-odd countries in the world do – does not matter. You can still trade with it and have better relations."@en1
