"Mr President, I have been disappointed by the reaction of my colleagues towards the Commission on groundhandling services.
The aim of the Commission was the further opening of the market to improve both the competitiveness of our airports and the quality for passengers. The UK has free-market access in this sector, as have several other Member States, and this free-market approach works well. Of course, quality standards can be improved, and that is what we have been trying to do with this proposal.
We Liberals and Democrats believe that, as free-market access is the norm in EU transport policy, the complete liberalisation of the groundhandling market should be the ultimate goal. It is difficult to understand why the groundhandling market still stays restricted.
I really hope that the referral back to committee of this legislative proposal will allow us to work towards that goal and that we will not see it go further backwards from what has been achieved so far."@en1
