Indeed they were describing to me exactly that position, but they explained to me that they are able to reduce the massive amount of protection and finance that has gone into that because the murder rate – which is still diabolical across the whole of society in Colombia, while still targeting to some extent trade unionists – has fallen!
I am not sure if you are aware of this, but only last week the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which is the equivalent of the EU Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, gave a clean bill of health to Colombia on its human rights record. That is an absolute breakthrough. We here should all be welcoming that development rather than continuing to criticise the country for historical human rights abuses which this government in Colombia has struggled to overcome."@en1
