"Madam President, it is unacceptable for the Erasmus programme to be put at risk as a result of this erratic, suicidal European economic policy that is backing privatisation, and the dismantling of the public sector. For the educational community in the southern European countries hit hardest by the crisis, this could be the unacceptable last straw.
In my own country, Spain, everyone in education is protesting in order to defend free, public education, which is at risk due to these cuts and the economic intervention of the Troika, which is suffocating southern Europe.
The fact that this programme is being put at risk is going to further aggravate the situation and, moreover, accentuate the harsh budget cuts, tax increases, restrictions on and reductions in additional grants and the burden of debt taken on by students and families in order to avail themselves of the universal right to a good education.
What is more, European and social cohesion are also being put at risk, which to some extent is creating a two-speed Europe, which we are not prepared to accept; the whole of the educational community must operate under the same conditions and at the same level."@en1
