"I supported the resolution on a strategy for strengthening the rights of vulnerable consumers because the people of Latvia would benefit from greater consumer protection in the European Union. We still have different rules in various EU Member States and the degree of consumer protection varies. The resolution emphasises the need to do more in this area. That is to say, we must plug the gaps in the legislation in order to remedy the deficiencies and adapt to the existing situation. However, the most important issue is the differing quality of goods in EU countries. It is no secret that the quality of products of the same brand can be lower in Eastern European countries than the quality of those on sale in Western Europe. This is grossly unfair, and the EU must rectify the situation. That is why I made a proposal that gained support and has been included in the final text of the resolution. Work in this area will continue in the EU, and I shall work on proposals that will protect Latvian consumers and ensure they are included in draft legislation."@en1
