"In light of the increasing scarcity of many raw materials and the EU’s increasing dependence on imports of raw materials, in particular from China, the Commission has identified 14 critical raw materials which are essential to the future of European industry, and especially important for the transformation to a low carbon and sustainable economy, as they are used in high-tech products such as catalysts, batteries or the construction of renewable energies. This report calls for a coherent strategy, with a Commission working group, to focus on increasing innovation on raw materials use, utilising our R&D strengths to discover more ways of recycling and increasing efficiencies in the use of raw materials, and to look at the sustainable extraction of raw materials."@en1
