"I voted in favour of this report. Securing better access to justice is one of the key objectives of the European Union’s policy to establish an area of freedom, security and justice. The objective of the Mediation Directive in the Member States, adopted in 2008, is to promote the amicable settlement of disputes by encouraging the use of mediation and by ensuring a balanced relationship between mediation and judicial proceedings. Furthermore, the general principles laid down in the directive are aimed at ensuring that parties using mediation in the European Union benefit from predictable framework legislation. I believe that there is a need to increase public awareness and understanding of mediation, to encourage mediation uptake by businesses, and to set out requirements for the profession of mediator and encourage national authorities to develop programmes in order to promote adequate knowledge of alternative dispute resolution."@en1
