"The Fuel Cells and Hydrogen (FCH) Joint Undertaking was created by Council Regulation (EC) No 521/2008. FCH technologies are promising, long-term energy options that can be used in all sectors of the economy and offer a broad range of benefits for energy security, transport, the environment and resource efficiency. They are expected to play a major role in the transition of the EU to a low carbon society and to achieving the goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by over 85% by 2050.
Despite the financial crisis, the major EU competitors in this field (the US, Japan, South Korea and China) continue to conduct comprehensive efforts to overcome these barriers via research and technological development programmes, policy measures, and commercialisation exercises. It is therefore crucial that the EU continues to invest in this technology, which makes it necessary to revise the regulation that created it – which we are now amending – in the way the Commission proposes."@en1
