"Like other regions of the world, the South Pacific Ocean did not have a convention on the conservation and management of its high seas fishery resources. Represented by the Commission, the Union participated in negotiations aiming to change this state of affairs and, since July 2010, it has been a signatory of the Convention on the Conservation and Management of High Seas Fishery Resources in the South Pacific Ocean. Despite the step taken by the European Union and the importance of the issue underlying that instrument of international law, the majority of states involved seem reluctant to definitively commit. The delay in ratifying the convention by important countries, whose good practices and fishing tradition would make it possible to foresee another way, weakens the agreement that has been reached and threatens its actual implementation. I hope that this situation will be reversed and that the convention can come into force, so as to ensure sustainability and proper management of fishery resources in the South Pacific. Like the rapporteur, I believe the Union should be a party to the majority of conventions of this sort, so as to seek to ensure respect for its interests, the defence of the conservation of species and the adoption of best practices by other actors."@en1
