"This report, drafted by our fellow Member, Mr Moreira, concerns a recommendation on the 2006 International Tropical Timber Agreement, taking into account the Council decision to conclude it on behalf of the European Union. Data from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development show that every year, an area of forest covering the size of Greece is destroyed, which is a threat to biodiversity and exacerbates the risk of global warming. This is an issue that has been discussed at several international meetings, and has led to the conclusion of agreements and the creation of international bodies, such as the International Tropical Timber Organisation, which are attempting to implement a credible licensing scheme and prevent the illegal logging of trees that are very often hundreds of years old.
As such, I voted for this recommendation because it reflects the concerns of Parliament, in particular, and of all Europeans, in general, as regards the protection and sustainable management of tropical forests, and advocates the restoration of degraded habitats and promotes a policy of education, so as to prevent the excessive deforestation of these regions."@en1
