I abstained from this vote. I am not opposed in principle to any country’s entry to a Union that I do not wish to see as a club closed to countries that respect minimum values of democracy and human rights, and whose people freely choose accession. However, I cannot accept the pressures being applied to Croatia to speed up processes of privatising public companies. Nor can I accept the Commission’s political interference in the internal decision-making process by supporting organisations that advocate accession in a country where, as the latest Eurobarometer shows, the majority of citizens believe that it would not be beneficial; this is not surprising if we consider the antisocial nature of current EU policy."@en1
