"Over recent years, the EU has been the main institutional player in the fight against the death penalty. This fight has been a priority of its foreign policy related to human rights. The truth is that there are still over 40 countries in the world which exercise the death penalty. As one of these countries, Belarus, is in Europe, we feel it necessary to make every effort to achieve the abolition of the death penalty throughout the world, given that it is the most cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment and violates the right to life set down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is the reason for my vote."@en1
