"In September 2009, Lithuania submitted a request for assistance to use the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) in connection with the redundancies which were made in 128 firms in the civil construction sector. I voted for the European Parliament Resolution on the mobilisation of the EGF for building construction in Lithuania.
I believe that an eco-efficient economy and construction of energy-efficient buildings can help bring about economic recovery in the EU. It is estimated that these sectors can create around 2 million jobs across Europe by 2020.
In 2006, there were approximately 2.9 million firms operating in the construction sector, generating EUR 510 billion and providing jobs for 14.1 million people at EU-27 level. As a result of the economic and financial crisis, during the first and second quarters of 2009, the volume of activity in the construction sector in Lithuania fell by 42.81% and 48.04% respectively, compared with the early part of 2008. This is having an adverse impact on Lithuania at a time when it has one of highest unemployment rates in the EU. The construction sector has been particularly affected, accounting for the loss of nearly 10% of jobs in Lithuania in 2008 alone."@en1
