"Against the backdrop of the economic and financial crisis, the unemployment rate for women rose by 1.6% in 2009, compared with the rate for men, which rose by 2.7%.
There has been a significant increase in women’s involvement in the decision-making process in politics. The percentage of women in the European Parliament has risen from 31% to 35%, compared with the previous parliamentary term. The percentage of women representing Romania is 36%. Taking the example of Romania, the election of a woman, a former MEP, as President of the Romanian Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies marks a first. On a personal note, as a young woman embarking on a political career, I stood as an independent candidate for the European Parliament, managing to obtain the necessary number of votes, without the help of a party list.
