"More trade union activists are murdered each year in Colombia than in the rest of the world combined. In 2005, 70 trade unionists were killed, while 260 received death threats, 56 were arbitrarily detained, seven survived attacks in which explosives or firearms were used, six were kidnapped, and three disappeared. The Commission has taken great pride in touting its credentials in matching GSP benefits with rights standards. Even the ILO itself has stated that Colombia is not in full compliance with ILO core labour standards, which should be necessary to afford GSP+ benefits. Ratification of an ILO convention is not the same as implementation, as trade unionists in Colombia will readily testify. I therefore welcome this resolution and the statement made by Commissioner Mandelson during the debate and urge the Commission to review Colombia's GSP+ status. Otherwise a country which murders its trade unionists will continue to appear to be rewarded for doing so."@en1
