"I should like to thank the Commissioner for that answer and to encourage him, when preparing that draft legislation, to examine whether or not there is a case for phasing out livestock markets entirely. I believe that in certain countries they have virtually ceased to exist. After all, it is not just a question of animal welfare, it is also a question of the spread of disease. Perhaps in the modern age such markets are no longer the best way of dealing with the trade in animals. If the Commission concludes that they must remain, then they should be properly regulated. I welcome what the Commissioner has just said, but does he agree that it should apply not just to the transport of animals that fall to some degree under the existing directive but to the protection of all animals that pass through such livestock markets?"@en1
