"Mr President, next week will mark the first anniversary of the Brussels terrorist bombings. 32 innocent civilians were killed on the streets of Brussels, and around Parliament we are all too familiar now with the army’s presence and regular patrols of the police that followed those attacks. It is a reminder to us all in Europe of the challenges that our societies face as we seek to prevent radicalisation of our young people. Of the five terrorists, four were Belgians and a fifth was a Swede. These attacks illustrate the importance of intelligence—sharing mechanisms to fight cross—border crime and terrorism that develops within the EU. Whether this is the Passenger Name Records, the Prüm Convention, the European Criminal Records Information System (ECRIS), the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) or the Schengen Information System. These are all vital to providing security and protecting our citizens. As my country seeks to leave the European Union, I believe it is of utmost importance that the UK stays as plugged—in as possible to all of these programmes, and that security cannot be a bargaining chip but instead be settled as a top priority early on in the Brexit negotiations."@en1
