"Mr President, as the European Union reaches another important milestone with the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, I want also to acknowledge another significant event in the United Kingdom. This week in our national Parliament legislation was finalised, paving the way for Brexit negotiations. Those who wish to delay and distract have been defeated. I am happy to align myself with the remarks made by our Prime Minister in the House of Commons, acknowledging that the triggering of Article 50 will be a defining moment for our nation as we work to forge a new relationship with Europe and embrace the challenges of a new role in the wider world. As the European Union discusses its own future in Rome, it is clear that Brexit will be a reality. It is in the interests of all of us, in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe, that we set aside our differences and work to make it a new and successful relationship, one of cooperation and partnership, in making our people more prosperous and secure."@en1
