"Mr President, my mother used to say ‘Waste not, want not’, and I think many of us in this House will know that phrase. It makes a great deal of sense and that is why I supported all of these reports on waste management. However, we are going to have to do some work in Member States to convince the public to deal with their household waste in a way that separates what can be recycled from other waste streams. I was disappointed to learn that several – I think 160 – containers of green-bin waste from Ireland were stopped because they were found to be contaminated. So we need an education and awareness programme for citizens about the importance of separating waste in a way which allows us to reuse it, putting it back into the entire production cycle. Lastly, I would say that rural Europe, including rural Ireland, tends to be used as an illegal dumping ground for waste from villages, towns and cities, and this needs to stop. We are destroying our countryside."@en1
