"Mr President, I voted against this Commission proposal. There were some areas that I was able to support, but they were nowhere near enough to protect the interests of the United Kingdom organisations with which I met over the preceding months leading to today’s vote. The key objectives to thwart terrorism and the transfer of illegal weapons for terrorist purposes will never be delivered by this particular proposal. They will not be delivered because of the fundamental pillar of the single market: the freedom of movement, people, services and goods. All the time that fundamental pillar is in place, nothing is going to change the access and transfer of weapons – whether they are there for lawful or unlawful purposes – within the European Union Member States. That means that the single market, because of its issues that I have explained, is outdated, dangerous and out of touch, given the sort of proposals that this Chamber has considered today."@en1
