"Mr President, this report contains many, many important aspects but paragraphs 49 and 50 – where we talk about the differences in health requirements for horsemeat produced in Europe and for horsemeat imported into Europe from third countries – are particularly pertinent. This is an issue that has been raised by many colleagues, not just in my Member State of Ireland, and it is a problem that the Commission is aware of, although thus far it has either decided not to do anything or is unable to do anything.
The vote for this report today repeats our message to the Commission that consumers do not want different standards for horsemeat produced within the EU and horsemeat that is imported. I was surprised to learn that over 75% of horsemeat is imported into Europe – so we rely heavily on imports – and that, as a result of our strict standards in Europe, half of our horses are excluded from the food chain, even though they could usefully be included. And given that we are going to vote on food waste, maybe this is an issue that needs to be looked at."@en1
