"Mr President, this has been a very interesting debate. It is notable that each of the rapporteurs and many of the speakers have pointed out that we are at best stagnating on equality between women and men and, in many ways, we are going backwards. We should, of course, celebrate the ongoing achievements of the EU in support of women. Indeed, frequently, it is only EU funds that ensure that support. But we must move away from assuming that simply having specific programmes aimed means ‘job done’ and that somehow that alone delivers equality. It won’t! I welcome the Commissioner’s recognition that this report is timely in relation to discussions on the EU budget, and that we should use all means available. The budget must be seen as part of those ‘all means’. If we are to make progress, we have to adopt gender mainstreaming across the whole budget, using the many gender budgeting tools that have been proven to work. Unless we recognise the hidden and unintended consequences of the way the budget is used, we will always fail to address our goal of defeating inequality. Thank you for all the support that has been expressed for this report. I look forward to the vote tomorrow, but even more, I look forward to the action to follow-up on the report’s recommendations."@en1
