"Mr President, the Creative Europe programme addresses two of the most fundamental issues that we face today. One is: what are the future jobs going to be? The other is: how in this divisive time do we bring people and communities together? When we look at the possibilities that the digital world of the 21st century will provide for skilled employment, the cultural sector is often rightly cited as the source of jobs long into the future. The new financial instrument aimed at SMEs only deepens the importance of this programme in supporting the growth of this sector.
Beyond the imperatives of growth, there is the separate work of bringing people together. In particular, this programme has now taken on the responsibility of supporting social inclusion for refugees. Ms Costa’s excellent report highlights the strength of this work, but also importantly points to what can be done to improve its delivery. We must ensure it has the resources to fulfil its important role in our society."@en1
