"Madam President, I welcome the ethical development of robotics, which has the potential to transform our lives. However, I would like to issue a word of warning so that we can begin to prepare for what will inevitably be a huge amount of enforced leisure time for millions of people across the globe. When robotics do most of the work, how will we spend our time? Vegetating in front of a screen in passive mode, watching poor quality TV, or engaged in life-enhancing activities that promote personal and community development, and connect us with the wider world? I would like to propose that we embrace the concept of occupational literacy now, and take steps to train ourselves and future generations through innovative life-long learning, and promote active engagement in arts and sport, so that co-existence with robotics will be harmonious and of benefit to the human race, not a curse for future generations. The idea of occupational literacy also relates to citizenship. If we are not taught the processes of government, or critical-thinking skills, we do not have the occupational literacy to effectively engage in democratic processes."@en1
