"Mr President, over my years in this House, I have participated in many debates on the Middle East peace process. These debates always have the same tone: largely anti-Israel, largely pro—Palestinian. When we have Members in this House referring to Israel as a terrorist state, is it any wonder that – as one EPP Member pointed out – the European institutions are largely seen as irrelevant to a peaceful solution? Indeed, given the election of President Trump, this is likely to be increasingly the case.
Settlements are a huge issue and the current handling of them is unhelpful, but so too is violence against the State of Israel. When will this Chamber recognise that Israel is an important economic partner, an important partner in the fight against terrorism, and the only fully functioning democracy in the Middle East? This Chamber needs to be more even—handed in its handling of these very sensitive issues."@en1
