"Madam President, conventional wisdom has it that when there is a breakdown of law and order it is due to external forces. In Ireland, at the moment, law and order is in crisis but it is a crisis that comes from within. The country is convulsed and repulsed at the treatment of a police officer, a whistle-blower, Sergeant Maurice McCabe, an incredibly courageous individual who for his courage has been demonised in the most vile terms by some of the most senior echelons of the force, with a former press officer stating that he was instructed to spread lies and innuendo about Sergeant McCabe.
Then there is the Jobstown scandal. Deliberately and provocatively a government minister visited an area her government policies had helped to devastate. Her car was blocked by a sit-down protest but only her car. When she decided to leave, she did so unmolested and unharmed. As a result of this 19 people were arrested, a 15-year-old boy already found guilty and a former MEP up in court shortly, Paul Murphy. I stand with Paul Murphy and the other Jobstown protesters. So should every person in this House who believes in fairness."@en1
