"Madam President, last week (First) Vice-President Timmermans quietly shelved his anti-corruption reports, saying that there is no need for any more reports on Member States. However, in Ireland this week we have learned that there has been a vile, sinister and concerted campaign to destroy the character and private life of a Garda police whistle-blower. The whistle-blower, Maurice McCabe, raised concerns about Garda malpractice, but his complaints were not processed: instead he was vilified by his own police force and on Thursday it was disclosed that he was the victim of a false accusation of child abuse. A full public inquiry needs to ascertain whether there was collusion between government and the police force to destroy the character of Maurice McCabe. What the McCabes and the Irish public need to know now is who and what knew of this allegation. Was the Garda Commissioner involved in the smear campaign and were there present or former members of the Irish Government who were aware of the heinous false allegations? The time for cover-ups and black propaganda is over, but the fight against corruption is far from over, Vice-President Timmermans."@en1
