"Madam President, Indonesia is a prime example of where voters’ high hopes of an improvement in preceding government human rights failures might be addressed, might be righted and might be improved. But that has not been the case, and as we’ve all noted this morning, victimisation, persecution, denial of the free voice and inter-society violence continues unabated. However, care should be taken, and I do not agree with those of my colleagues who this morning have called on the EU to intervene in this situation. It is very complex, and a continent half a world away should not be interfering in a situation which should be dealt with by the geo-political grouping ASEAN, but should leave it for Asian countries surrounding Indonesia to resolve. We, the European Union, have a habit of intervening – intervening in the wrong way, as the sanctions against Russia have shown; we’ve called, in instances, for political isolation; we’ve even called for active military intervention. All of those have shown that EU intervention doesn’t work, shouldn’t be used, and shouldn’t be allowed in this instance."@en1
