"I supported this oral question, which urges the Commission to include and inform Parliament when negotiating international aviation agreements with third countries.
The Council has authorised the Commission to start negotiations on aviation safety agreements with China and Japan on 8 March 2016 and on EU-level air services agreements with ASEAN, Turkey, Qatar and United Arab Emirates on 7 June 2016. Furthermore, the Council is deliberating draft negotiating directives for opening negotiations on EU-level air service agreements with China, Mexico, Armenia, and the remaining four Member States of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The resolution stresses that EP should have an access to fully follow the process of negotiation from the beginning and all necessary (confidential) documents have to be given to the Committee responsible, thereby giving maximum transparency.
There were some good amendments, including respect for sovereignty at national level and raising concerns related to opening the sky to third-party companies experiencing rapid growth at a time when many European companies are facing serious economic and financial difficulties.
For these reasons I voted in favour."@en1
