"Mr President, it is my belief that petitions serve as a valuable indication of European citizens’ concerns in the sphere of both national and European legislation and the actions of associated authorities. Thus it is our responsibility to ensure that the framework and procedures of the Committee on Petitions is constantly evaluated and indeed improved upon. By this means we may rely on the results of the processing of petitions and its more intense role in the European Parliament and European lawmaking and revision more substantively. I acknowledge shortcomings in the processing and handling of petitions to date. However, in reinforcing our political commitment in this domain we may revise present deficiencies with regard to the timescale and effective conclusion of petitions, the establishment of a clear mandate, and the potential for the digitalisation of this field. Should said considerations be taken into account and the full potential of the European Citizens’ Initiative be realised, my colleagues and I in the EPP Group would welcome this most enthusiastically."@en1
