"There is no doubt that the situation of human rights in the world today is dire – as we voted on this report, the Assad regime was destroying what was left of besieged Aleppo, reportedly massacring thousands of civilians. My thoughts and actions are with those innocent people caught up in the conflict and suffering through no fault of their own. We must also stand up and fight for the release of human rights defenders and political prisoners around the world. The human rights defender Nabeel Rajab is still in prison whilst the Bahraini government reviews his tweets. The European Union, the Higher Representative, must demand his immediate release. In Iran, UK—Iranian citizen Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe has been imprisoned for unknown charges, separated from her baby daughter and her husband Richard. The UK Government and EU diplomats must do more to secure her release. Together with my colleagues, I will continue to do what I can to ensure she comes home safely."@en1
