"Madam President, transparency in the management of services and application of funds in our European ports is a priority, which I am pleased to say is at the forefront of our agenda. Indeed the enhancement of existing procedures and regulations marks an essential step towards the development of more efficient competition rules within and between our Member States. The knock-on effects of the recommendations contained within this report would also prove central to marked improvements in the labour conditions within our ports. Also, of course, as we move to implementing COP 21 commitments, the maritime sector is going to play a huge role in that regard, and already there are moves afoot to make it more efficient from an energy point of view and, as the previous speaker mentioned, taking transport off the roads. In my constituency we have a great port, the finest port in the Shannon estuary, one of the deepest and most naturally deep ports in Europe, and it has huge potential but it needs to get on the corridor so that it can be beneficial for the region and for Europe."@en1
