"Mr President, I am delivering this speech on behalf of my colleague, Dr Julia Reed. The Paediatric Regulation was adopted 10 years ago to ensure high-quality research into the development of medicines for children and appropriate authorisation of paediatric medicines. However, in 2013 several inadequacies were identified by the Progress Report adopted by the European Commission, especially with regard to paediatric oncology and neonatology. I appreciate that this motion for a resolution investigates this issue and that the development of a policy supporting paediatricians in improving children’s services is of major importance. I also agree with colleagues that children make up the most vulnerable part of the population and that research in the field of paediatric medicine should be given the same parity as adult health research.
We in UKIP are extremely concerned about the well-being and health of children. However, I firmly believe that this should and would be better done at national level. National parliaments should be the only entities entitled to legislate on this fundamental issue. Every Member State should shape policy and practices in order to provide high quality and sustainable healthcare services for all children in their own country."@en1
