"Madam President, this is the third Christmas I have celebrated here as an MEP. Whilst I watch Members of this House enjoy lavish drinks receptions and parties, I think of the millions of European families who will have a different Christmas caused by the EU’s failed policies, thinking, and the euro; one of unemployment, one of poverty, one of austerity.
And whilst I supported Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, I will also be thinking of Charles Dickens’s three ghosts in his book
. The ghost of Christmas Past was the British people’s yearning for a lost freedom and self-determination. I see the ghost of Christmas Present as Brexit, a messenger of hope, and I glimpse the ghost of Christmas Future, where Britain’s prosperity will be engaging with other countries across the world. I quote from Dickens: ‘I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it here all year’. I only wish the European Union would do the same for its people, but nonetheless, Merry Christmas to you all."@en1
