The ways to avoid war would be first of all to stop crazy foreign interventions that are totally unnecessary, to stop the political posturing that pushes people like crazy tyrants in Russia to the edge of having to respond, and that peace can be best achieved through strength – and strength is best achieved through NATO, not some hare-brained scheme of European defence armies that will never work.
