"Madam President, here we go again: it is another uncritical report, another unrelenting push for the militarisation of Europe at all levels. A coordinated EU security and defence policy through to an EU army will not make our citizens any safer, in fact the militarisation of the EU is nothing more than a vanity project by Commissioners and larger Member States. The calls for increased military funding for Member States to meet NATO capacity goals and the call for the EU to combine its soft power with hard power are ludicrous. It is a promotion of an EU arms industry while social expenditure is being simultaneously slashed. We are all well-versed in the history of Europe to know what happened the last time that Europe became extremely militarised. Will the only difference now be that this time the guns will be pointing outwards instead of in? May I also conclude by stating that reports like this are further evidence of the contempt for neutral Member States by many in this Parliament and the European institutions."@en1
