"Mr President, there is no doubt that the situation of human rights in the world today is dire. As we speak, the Assad regime is destroying what is left of besieged Aleppo, reportedly massacring thousands of civilians. Our thoughts and actions are with those suffering right now. We must also stand up and fight for the release of human rights defenders and political prisoners around the world. Sadly, human rights defender Nabeel Rajab, seen here, is still in prison, whilst the Bahraini Government reviews his tweets. The European Union, you, High Representative, must demand his immediate release. In Iran, UK-Iranian citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been imprisoned for unknown charges, separated from her baby daughter and her husband, Richard. The UK Government and EU diplomats must do more to secure her release. Together with my colleagues I will continue to do what I can to ensure she comes home safely. And colleagues, I would urge all of you to take part in the annual Amnesty International ‘Write for Rights’ campaign for the release of political prisoners."@en1
