"Mr President, in one of these packages the Commission proposes to intensify competitive pressure on domestic railway markets, then in the others it calls for more subsidisation of rail services. How can you have fair competition with more and more subsidisation? This report is full of contradictions and, as per usual, it thinks it can solve all of the EU’s rail problems with a one—size—fits—all approach which has never worked before. It concerns me that the Commission and the Chamber do not seem to learn from their mistakes. But on a positive note, being able to buy a rail ticket from my home town in Telford to Paris without having to find my way through multiple different websites and companies is fundamentally a good idea. However, this should be done on a company-to-company basis, or bilaterally for those countries with a nationalised rail service. This Chamber should be deregulating the market and enabling private enterprise to do this themselves."@en1
