"For this file, I voted against. Despite the extra financing for the EU Youth Unemployment Initiative, this remains the most draconian budget in decades and this is reflected on the basis on the volume of cuts to funding to a number of progressive and social programmes that the Council have pushed through. Despite the all efforts and requests from the European Parliament, Member States within the Council, in particular from the right-wing governments of the wealthier Member States, were lacking in solidarity towards the rest, and this was apparently a recurring feature of the negotiations. The hallmark of this budget is that it indicates that austerity politics and policies driven by the Council will continue for the foreseeable future. Fundamentally there will also be cuts to tackling climate change, cuts to the European Institute for Gender Equality, social and cohesion funding which was forecast to be a 23.5 % reduction compared to 2016. All this whilst Trust funds for Turkey, Africa, etc. are to be reinforced."@en1
