"Mr President, hate crime is unacceptable and each day we see an increase in these despicable actions right across the EU. In my constituency of Northern Ireland some great work is being done to combat the causes and recently I was contacted by a local skills SME, which works with employers, developing recruitment models that are fairer to migrant workers. In many cases workers may have the professional skills and experience but the qualifications they have achieved elsewhere are not recognised. This often leads them to become socially and economically isolated. It is vital that every citizen has the capacity to make their own contribution and this is critical to changing the unwanted perceptions in society.
I am saddened today to hear many in this Chamber refer to the result of the British referendum as a victory for racism or xenophobia. I, like the majority of people in the United Kingdom, was heartbroken by the death of Jo Cox. The British people are a welcoming people, our communities are some of the most diverse across the continent. Crimes like this are abhorrent to the vast and overwhelming majority of our people. In choosing Brexit we simply rededicated our commitment to be free from the unnecessary disorder of Brussels."@en1
