"I voted for this report together with fellow Labour MEPs as it is fully in line with Labour's initiatives in the field of wildlife protection and conservation (at home and abroad) as well as the tackling of wildlife crime. Wildlife crime must be recognised as a major international issue, with profound implications for the environment, bio-diversity, governance, sustainable tourism, local economies, and so on. It requires urgent attention in terms of political and financial support for affected countries, as well as a more responsible approach to global trade. I would like to acknowledge the excellent work undertaken by civil society in raising awareness of the issue and helping to build public and political support. In line with my parliamentary work on this issue I have also taken personal action by sponsoring one of the threatened species, namely a young male Black Rhino called Lankieu."@en1
