"Mr President, I am pleased to support this report, which seeks to curb widespread fraud involving VAT by establishing a reverse charging system, as excellently authored by my colleague, Werner Langen.
Putting in place a definitive VAT system will help to close the VAT gap, which for Ireland was under 10% in 2014. This still equates to over EUR 1 billion in uncollected VAT revenue, which through the provisions contained in the report will hopefully be better channelled into meeting the exigencies of the country in the future. I think we are heading in the right direction, and I look forward to the evaluation of pilot programmes in other Member States, which highlight how knowledge sharing and systems of best practice are central elements to the success and development of the Union.
The fight against fraud has to continue. During the week we also discussed fighting against money laundering and its impact on terrorist activities, etc. If we can close the gap there in a whole area of fraud, citizens would have to pay less tax and services could be improved."@en1
